Sing the Sun Down 

(2009).

My quilt was inspired by the collaborative work of

Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran.

I made strips sets, cut the basket triangles, and 

used the leftover strip set ends to cut handles

which were machine appliqued in place.

The fabrics used for the 16 unique handle starbursts 

were also used for the piano key border.

And that backing ... oh, how I love that fabric!

Scrappy, multi-directional quilts are my favorites

and one day soon I will begin making colorful scrap-fabric 

for a new basket full of scraps quilt . . .

(if only I didn't have to go to work!)

Speaking of baskets...

Here's some basket inspiration. This quilt is one of twelve similar quilts shown at the Sisters, Oregon quilt show last summer. There is a group of 12 quilt-makers who go to the show every year and stay the whole week to sew together. They come from all over the US and Canada. Last year they made baskets for each member of the group. Then each member made her own quilt from them. I especially like the fish basket.

I am unsure if I want light or dark fabric for the background but can't stop experimenting with different shapes!

Here are my supplies:

A drawer FULL of black and brown.

As you can see....I have plenty to work with here.

No need to buy anything. ;)

And a basket shaped piece of paper.

Simple supplies.

Fun sewing.

First I made the fabric....
then I made a basket block

Well mine is a bit more reserved than Sujata's...but I had fun making it!
I took my inspiration from the many liberated basket quilts by Gwen Marston and made it my own...
this was fun I hope to make a basket a day till I have a quilt top!

How to construct a basket block

Start with the desired size and shape of a crazy patch to make the basket.

Place the patch on a background RIGHT SIDES UP
My basket patch was big enough which required to piece the background.

Start cutting from the upper right corner moving counter clockwise to the left of the patch.
This is required if you have angled top to the basket top.

When piecing the background to the basket patch, start sewing the last cut piece first.
In other words, clockwise from the bottom right corner moving towards left.

Sew the bottom left corner of the background to the basket.

 The left upper edge and then the right top corner piece.

 Place the handle and base for eyeballing the size of each piece.

 

Trim the extra background fabric from the bottom edge of the basket. You will use this to sew the base of the basket.

Place the base of the basket on top of the background base fabric RIGHT SIDES UP matching the top edges and trim off the top tip of the triangle base.

 Sew both sides of background to each side of the triangle base of the basket.

You should have a piece that looks like this. Trim off top and bottom to finish the edges.

 

 I sewed another strip of background fabric at the base of the base!

 With Right sides together, stitch the base to the bottom edge of the basket.

Cut a desired size handle from the freezer paper for template. Iron it on the right side of the fabric. Add 1/4" seam allowance and cut out the handle.

Machine or hand applique the handle on to the top of the basket.

Like a lot of you, I love working with verity of projects. I enjoy making traditional quilts and constantly improvise on techniques, color choices and different textures.  

Whenever I am in between projects, I start making fabric from scraps and put them aside. You never know when they might come handy! These baskets started out in an effort to clean up my sewing room. I had always wanted to make a scrap basket quilt. As I kept making the patches, they became larger and turned into baskets.  I made a number of them.

Soon, I realized how much fun they were. So the next thing was to invite all of you to join in the fun!

You can make crazy patch or out of strings, use orphan blocks and make them small or big..
One or ten or twenty... sky is the limit!

The possibilities are endless! Knowing how much you all like working on an impulse, I have no doubt that this is going to be a cheerful and fun place to visit and get inspired!

I know I am going to make many..
I want a place for us to gather while we gather our baskets.

Only one Catch! ( I said.... No rules) I lied!
May I ask politely to use scraps?
How can you not? They look so bright and cheerful!

There are no deadlines to finish a quilt. This is a place to post pictures of your love for scraps.
I will post references on making a basket block soon. Meanwhile, start having fun making those crazy patches!
